VALT

Note work on this project has now ceased. This page is left available for archive purposes.

VALT is a proof-of-concept application, created to explore the abilities of modern games engines to provide archaeological tools for landscape investigation. It was born out of a PhD project that sadly never saw submission.

The VALT project lives on and has the potential to become a very powerful tool for the collaborative exploration of archaeological landscapes. We are currently seeking funding to take this software beyond its initial development up to a full release. You can download the proof-of-concept version of the software here. Please note that it has not been optimised beyond the original test machine (a high end gaming laptop) and requires SteamVR compatible VR Hardware.

The use of this software is subject to an End User Licence Agreement (EULA) which is detailed in the application installer. Please do not install this application if you do not agree to those terms.

The Archaeology Ex Machina thesis that the software was developed for, identified various areas of improvement for the application as well as extensive notes on the reception of the software when tested with landscape archaeologists. These notes have been compiled into a work-in-progress Software Design Document which can be downloaded below.
